STNewsline (sm) 15/2008 - European Edition

More than 1250 chemistry-relevant records for U.S. patents issued from 1808-1859 have been added. In total, CA/CAplus now includes more than 1.8 million records for U.S. patents, spanning 200 years.

Kind codes for Chinese granted patents from 1993-present have been changed from B to C to match kind codes of the State Intellectual Property Office of the Peoples Republic of China (SIPO). More than 50,000 records have been updated.

2. EPFULL - ENHANCED WITH LEGAL STATUS INFORMATION FROM EPOLINE® REGISTER

European Patents Full Text (EPFULL) has been enhanced with legal status information from the daily updated epoline(R) Register of the European Patent Office (EPO).

The information is supplemental to existing legal status information published in the European Patent Bulletin (EP Bulletin) and includes applicant communications, event lists, and details of the examination procedure.

epoline(R) Register information is available in a new EPFULL Legal Status European Patent Register (LSEPR) display field. This new field includes EPFULL Legal Status with History (LSEP.M) and a hyperlink to additional epoline Register data in PDF. There is no extra charge for the additional data.

The hyperlink may be clicked in the session transcript multiple times at no additional charge for 90 days. However, information in the PDF is not updated during this time and reflects epoline(R) Register information at the time the LSEPR command was initiated.

3. FSTA - COVERAGE OF BEVERAGES

With the total number of records now exceeding 800,000 the FSTA (Food Science and Technology Abstracts) database covers topics relating to every aspect of the food chain. One of the largest food commodity areas included covers alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, a section which now exceeds 92,000 records.

A wide range of source journals for beverages data are abstracted by IFIS (International Food Information Service) on a regular basis including the following list:

- Journal of Food Quality

FSTA is updated on a weekly basis with the numbers of beverages records increasing regularly - almost 2700 records have been added to this section already during 2008.

4. IFICDB/IFIPAT/IFIUDB - RELOADED WITH ENHANCEMENTS

IFI Comprehensive Database (IFICDB), IFI Patent Database (IFIPAT), and IFI Uniterm Database (IFIUDB) have been reloaded with enhancements, including:
- U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reclassifications as of January 2008
- International Patent Classification (IPC) reclassifications as of November 2006

The following fields are now searchable and selectable:
- IPC, Initial (IPCI)
- IPC, Reclassified (IPCR)

In addition, IFICDB, IFIPAT, and IFIUDB now include 11 character patent numbers for U.S. applications. The 11 character format is consistent with that used by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other key STN patent resources, including Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI), INPADOCDB, CA/CAplus, CASREACT, USPATFULL, and USPAT2.

Database crossover is not affected by the update. There is no need to edit current-awareness alerts (SDIs) that included 10 character patent numbers for U.S applications. In addition, searches using a 10 or 11 character number will retrieve the same record:

5. INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB - ALL PATENT PUBLICATION EVENTS COVERED

In the INPADOCDB and INPAFAMDB files, all patent publication events are now covered for all 81 authorities in the legal status display. This makes it easier to get the complete picture of granted patents or other publication events.

6. EPC2000 FULLY IMPLEMENTED IN EPFULL FILE

In week 30/2008 for the first time all new data elements due to the new European Patent Convention, referred to as EPC2000, were present in EPO's data supply. The EPC2000, came into force in December 2007, but the changes that the new convention implicates to the EPO Bibliographic Data (EBD) subsequently became effective as far as applicants made use of the new opportunities and the new procedures are determined before the EPO.

To accommodate the revised convention, new legal status events, additional bibliographic information and a novel kind of publication, EPB3 documents, were implemented in the EPFULL file.

7. 10 MILLIONTH ARTICLE FOR INSPEC

INSPEC, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)'s bibliographic database available on STN, now has more than 10 million records and it was a journal article from IOP (Institute of Physics) Publishing's Nanotechnology that pushed the database over the 10 million mark.

8. THE "LENGTH (LEN) n" KEYWORD USED WITH AN EXTRACTION COMMAND

Many STN® searchers are aware of the benefits of extracting terms from display fields for use in analysis or searching. But, did you know that you can extract only the first part of the desired terms rather than the whole term?

The "LENGTH (LEN) n" keyword, used with an extraction command (SELECT, ANALYZE, or TRANSFER), allows you to extract only a specified number (n) of characters or less.

11. DGI ONLINE-TAGUNG UND FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE

Bei der diesjaehrigen Online-Tagung der DGI vom 15. bis 17. Oktober 2008 auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse dreht sich alles um die Verfuegbarkeit von Informationen. In neun Sitzungen informieren Fachleute ueber ihre Ueberlegungen und Projekte zur Sicherung der Verfuegbarkeit von Daten und Informationen am Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz und in Unternehmen. Anwendungsbeispiele mit neuen technischen Loesungen werden ebenso behandelt wie die Themen Sicherung beruflicher Kompetenz, Qualitaetsbewertung, tragfaehige Kooperationsmodelle oder Wettbewerbsbeobachtung.

Die 30. DGI Online-Tagung und 60. Jahrestagung der DGI stehen unter der Schirmherrschaft der Frankfurter Oberbuergermeisterin Petra Roth. Den Festvortrag wird die Geschaeftsfuehrerin von FIZ Karlsruhe, Sabine Bruenger-Weilandt, halten.

Das DGI-Tagungsprogramm wird flankiert von diversen Veranstaltungen, die sich an speziellen Teilnehmerinteressen orientieren. Patentspezialisten treffen sich am Nachmittag des 15. Oktober beim "STN Erfahrungsaustausch Patente" in Halle 4.0, Saal Europa 2. Diese Veranstaltung bietet die Moeglichkeit, sich ueber Neuigkeiten im Bereich Patentinformation bei STN zu informieren. Die Kooperation mit der Frankfurter Buchmesse ermoeglicht den kostenfreien Uebergang zur Messe und insbesondere den direkten Besuch und Erfahrungsaustausch mit ueber 500 Anbietern der Informationsbranche in der Halle 4.2. FIZ Karlsruhe praesentiert STN International und seine weiteren Dienste an Stand K432. Auf dem Digital Market Place sind auch softwaretechnische Neuerungen und eine Vielzahl von Entwicklungen rund um das Elektronische Publizieren zu finden. Das DGI-Tagungsprogramm beruecksichtigt dies mit Zeitfenstern fuer den Besuch.

Der NewComer-Tag für Studierende, Auszubildende und Berufseinsteiger findet diesmal am Eroeffnungstag in Halle 4.2. inmitten der Aussteller statt. Einige Vortraege werden im Forum Wissenschaft praesentiert werden.

Traditionell treffen sich im Rahmen dieser Jahrestagung auch die Fachgruppen und Arbeitskreise der DGI mit eigenen Programmen oder zum Erfahrungsaustausch. Mit dabei sind 2008 Senioren-Experten, die am Stand der DGI im Digital Market Place anzutreffen sind.
