Derwent World Patents Index^® (DWPI^SM)

The Derwent World Patents Index (files WPINDEX/ WPIDS/WPIX) is a comprehensive value-added database of worldwide patents covering all areas of technology. The intellectual value of DWPI is the result of a thorough editorial process of classification, abstracting, and indexing. Original titles and abstracts are rewritten to reveal the actual invention and highlight the main uses and advantages of the technology.

Content and coverage

The DWPI^SM database enables professionals to more easily research and understand the world’s innovations through editorially enhanced English-language abstracting and indexing of patent documents from 47 patent issuing authorities worldwide, including patent data from Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America. DWPI contains more than 22 million unique inventions covering 48 million individual patents and is used globally by thousands of organizations and 36 patent offices, making it the world’s most trusted and authoritative patent database. The file contains more than 22 million documents with more than 15 million images back to 1963 and is updated every 3-4 days.

Numeric Property Search Feature – exclusively on STN!

To add further value to this prestigious database on STN International, FIZ Karlsruhe has developed a unique new feature that allows for numeric property searching in the English text of all documents (enhanced title, abstracts, claims). That comprises

• 55 physical and chemical properties
• 1,800 spelling variants of units recognized
• Automatic unit conversion: A search in Kelvin will also generate hits with respective values in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.
• Proximity searching with numeric properties and keywords
• Flexible data input (ranges, tolerances, exact values)
