DWPI: Latest Manual Code Revision goes live

09. January 2017
The Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM) manual coding system annual revision is now complete and is being used by the DWPI editorial teams to code records appearing in the database from DWPI Update 201701 onward. The editorial team consistently applies DWPI manual codes to new inventions across all 50 authorities covered in the database. Since the coding highlights the novel technical aspects of the invention as well as the application(s), it is extremely useful to improve the precision and recall of searches and the subsequent analysis of result sets.

As with previous revisions, the coding has been updated to:

  • Reflect changes in technology
  • Take into account suggestions from DWPI users
  • Enhance code descriptions and scope notes to improve the consistency of code application by the editorial teams and understanding of what each code covers.
  • 254 changes have been made to the DWPI Manual Codes, including 73 new codes, as well as the updating of existing code titles, scope notes and/or search terms.

Significant enhancements include:

  • New codes for Bioprinting, B11-C17 and C11-C17
  • New sub-codes for P81-A01, Lens and lens systems, giving much finer levels of detail
  • New sub-codes and enhancements in W01-C01, Telephony - subscriber equipment, plus W02-C03, Radio systems

The lookup tool for DWPI Manual Codes is available at: http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/mcl/ Additionally, users can provide suggestions for future manual code revisions by sending them to scientific.mcrdwpi(at)thomsonreuters(dot)com
