The REACH Directive – We Provide Reliable Data

In 2007, the European Union (EU) launched a new regulatory framework for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of CHemicals - REACH.

REACH replaces the former EU laws on chemicals and provides a Europe-wide standard directive. For a better protection of human health and the environment against chemical hazards, all companies producing or selling chemicals are now required to collect detailed data about their products and to provide appropriate safety information for buyers and users of such products.

An excellent source of the required data on chemical and physical properties, toxicity, ecotoxicity, and the impact of chemicals on the environment are the databases on STN International. This online service is jointly operated by FIZ Karlsruhe and Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and offers  comprehensive, high-quality  information. The factual databases on STN contain information on physical, chemical, and (eco)toxicological properties of chemicals, whereas the bibliographical databases contain records of scientific and technical publications in chemistry.

Prestigious STN databases offering chemical information:

  • CAplus, the most current and comprehensive bibliographical database, produced by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), covers international journals, patents, research reports, e-journals, and books from 1907 to date.
  • REGISTRY, the world’s largest database on chemical substances, is also produced by CAS and contains CAS Registry Numbers for clearly identifying substances as well as structural formulae and information on chemical and physical properties.
  • BEILSTEIN, one of the most important structural and factual databases in organic chemistry, is based on the “Beilstein Handbuch der organischen Chemie” which has been existing since 1779. BEILSTEIN contains basic toxicological data (e.g. LD50), information on risks and exposure, ecotoxicological data, and information on the behaviour of chemicals in air, soil, and water.
  • DETHERM contains information on more than 500 thermo-physical properties of about 20,000 organic and inorganic compounds and mixtures.
  • CHEMSAFE is a factual database with evaluated data on more than 100 properties of about 2,800 burnable substances and 500 mixtures.

We invite you to benefit from this wealth of data in order to comply with the new REACH regulations. Use the factual databases on STN to collect the required data, and search in the bibliographic databases on STN to identify scientific and technical publications about chemicals that are of interest to you!

You can either collect all the necessary data yourself from our STN databases or let our expert staff help you fulfil the REACH requirements. Our search service team will be pleased to assist you with chemical searches of any kind and will provide you with information on:

  • structures of chemical compounds
  • chemical and physical properties
  • toxicological properties

We will also perform for you:

  • searches for biosequences
  • pharmaceutical searches, for example, for agents
  • bibliographical searches in other fields of research
  • searches for patent information in chemistry and related fields

Upon request, the search results (bibliographical information with abstracts) will be delivered to you by e-mail, fax, or mail.

We will also gladly assist you in procuring the full-texts of the documents you need. Our partners are renowned scientific publishing houses and international libraries. In most cases, we are also able to fulfill requests for literature which is not available with booksellers or for which bibliographic information is missing. Delivery will be made in electronic form, by fax, or by mail as a printout – just as you like.
