e-seminar
Structure searching in Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) using STN Express

B. Larner
R. Austin

In this Thomson Reuters and STN session we’ll show you how to learn efficiently search for chemical structures in the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) on STN using STN Express. It will be both a refresher/update for experts, and a useful introduction for those who are less familiar with the capabilities of DWPI on STN. The session will cover two specific types of DWPI chemical structure searching:

  • Standard STN structure searching using the Derwent Chemistry Resource (DCR)
  • Chemical Fragmentation Code searching using text strategies generated by STN Express

Get practical tips and tricks for both forms of searching, along with some advice on how to combine DWPI results with answers found using CAS Registry and CAplus databases on STN. We will also show you how to further focus your result set by linking the structures to their role in the invention (for example method of producing the compound or component of a composition), their pharmaceutical/agrochemical activities, or the area of technology they are being used in.

The Cooperative Patent Classification on STN

R. Austin

The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) is a new patent classification system jointly developed and maintained by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This bilateral classification system entered into force on January 1, 2013 and replaced the European patent classifications (ECLA and ICO) and will eventually replace the US Patent classification system.

CPC is being implemented in several STN databases, including INPADOC, DWPI and CAplus. In this e-Seminar, you will learn about:

  • STN databases that can be searched with CPC
  • The CPC thesaurus on STN
  • Search strategies for using CPC

Derwent Patent Citation Index – The perfect companion to DWPI for serious patent information users

B. Larner
R. Austin

When searching patent information everyone worries if they have missed anything important. So wouldn’t it be great if you could take advantage of the work carried out by patent examiners and/or assignees to identify relevant documents to a patent application? Patent citation information lets you do just that. The Derwent Patent Citation Index (DPCI) on STN contains family based citation information which allows you to identify all the forward and backwards citations related to a particular Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) family. What’s more the file uses the same accession numbers as DWPI on STN making it easy to transfer data between the two databases. In this talk we will explain how to get the most out of this valuable companion database to DWPI.
