Using highlighting to easily navigate a patent document

STN Viewers highlighting feature lets you find complete or partial terms in a large patent.  Simply highlight your terms and then use the Highlighting Map to quickly navigate to the parts of the document containing those terms.

To highlight terms:

  1. View details for a record.
  2. Within the Highlighting tab on the right side, enter terms to be highlighted.  Place terms on separate lines, or separate terms with commas or semicolons.

You can also use the following for truncation or character masking:

? or *

Any number of characters to the right, left, or within a term

#

One or zero characters to the right, left, or within a term (multiple # symbols may be used)

!

One character to the right, left, or within a term (multiple ! symbols may be used)

%

One or more numeric characters

  1. Click Apply. The Highlighting Map shows the density of highlighted terms.  The size of the scroll bar provides an indication of the portion of the record currently displayed on the screen.

To navigate the record:

Click on the portion of the map where you would like to reposition the scroll bar, or drag the scroll bar to reposition it.  Click on the Highlighting map to quickly move through the full text and find the terms of interest.
