I was at a conference recently, and heard about a paper concerning Alzheimer's Disease and butyrylcholinesterase. How can I find research articles on this topic and even aquire them? |
| Strategy: |
Searching for chemical substance information using a chemical name is a 2-step prozess:

1. Locate the CAS REGISTRY record for the
substance.
2. Select the LIFE SCIENCES link. This will start a "crossover search" from REGISTRY to the life sciences information of interest. |

If you do not have an existing STN account: To open a new STN Easy account, click the blue "Open New Account" button on the STN Easy Home Page and complete and submit the online forms. Within 30 minutes, your STN login ID and password will be sent to the e-mail address you specify. |
If you have an existing STN account: To log on to STN Easy, simply enter your login ID and password. Then click "Start Your Session." |

| The Search Page is displayed. It offers four different
search options: "Easy",
"Advanced",
"CAS
Number" and "Patent
Lookup" Search. The "Defined
Searches"link is available in case Defined Searches
have been created. |
| Since the search is related to a chemical substance,
begin by finding the CAS registry number for the substance.
By using the CAS registry number, all synonyms for the chemical
will automatically be searched in the Life Sciences category. |
| Select "CAS Number" tab and enter the
name "butyrylcholinesterase" in the search box. |
| Click the green "Search" button. - Please
note the search costs shown below the Search button. |

Option: Use the free "Browse
Index" button before clicking "Search" to make sure
that the chemical name you entered is spelled correctly and
is included in the database you have chosen - before you actually
pay for the search.
Simply select the chemical name you wish to search from the
"Browse Index" list, then click "Search". |

The list of answers is displayed in a table format on the Answer Page. Your search question and total number of answers are shown at the top of Answer Page as well. |
STN Easy locates butyrylcholinesterase in the CAS REGISTRY database. To display the detailed record, click the blue "Display Answers" button or directly the title hyperlink. - You may change the Display Format and Display Style using the selection boxes at the bottom of the title list. |

| To locate medical science or biomedical information that is directly related to the substance of interest, click the "Life Sciences" link. |

The list of answers is displayed on another Answer Page. More than 30,000 records in five STN Easy databases are retrieved! |
To narrow the search to only those research articles that discuss butyrylcholinesterase and "Alzheimer", click the "Refine Your Search" button. There is no additional charge to refine your STN Easy search! |

| Enter the key word "Alzheimer" in the first search box. In the second row of search terms, select "AND" and the search-field "Publication Years". Then select the period of time in the drop-down boxes. Since only recent research is desired, limit it to "1999" to "Current." |

A precise set of research information from several databases is located. Notice that, if desired, duplicate records from the search in multiple databases can be identified by clicking "Show Duplicates" |
| Review the answer titles, and click directly on a title of interest. - The display costs are shown to the right of the answer. |
| Hint: You may also change the "Display Format" and "Display Style" using the selection-boxes at the bottom of the title list. In order to view records for several answers at once, simply check the boxes next to the appropriate answers and click the "Display Answers" button at the bottom of the page. |
