What's in a Claim? Strategies for Searching
Patent Claims ![]()
Whether your organization is filing patent applications, assessing freedom
to operate, monitoring competitors, or looking for potential licensors,
it must be legally determined whether an invention is new, useful, and unobvious.
Because patentability and patent validity determinations are based on the
claims in a patent document, it is important to understand how the interpretation
of patent claims affect you search strategy. This session will focus on
identifying types of patent claims, ascertaining the scope of patent claims, developing search
strategies based on claim type and scope, and improving retrieval of references
that show whether the invention in a claim is new, useful, or unobvious.
The Virtual File on STN ![]()
The single best patent file on STN is the one created virtually, using STN's
search and display features, to meet your specific needs. Learn techniques
that allow content from many files to be merged together. An example will
merge content from value-added indexed patent files, such as REGISTRY,
CAPLUS,
or Derwent
WPI, with claims text from the full-text
patent files, and legal status information from IFICLS
or INPADOC.
The Custom Report tool in STN Express with Discover! will then be used to
create the final merged report.
